Gene Pool Cleansing Success?

The first time I saw Harley King he was standing up in sacrament meeting when Bishop Whetton called him to be my Ward Activities Committee co-chair. One couldn't help but notice Harley was short. A few days later, I had my first conversation with Harley, as we met in a BYUSA office to plan the Wardymplics (think SLC 2002 Winter Olympics on a ward level... it was great!). In the middle of our meeting he leaned across the table and with a Texas accent asked: "Have you ever dated a shorter man? Because I'm lookin' to cleanse the gene pool."

Six years later, Harley may have his achieved his goal! At yesterday's 32 1/2 week ultrasound, we learned our baby is five pounds! That's a BIG baby... and he keeps growing! Average weight for babies at this stage is only 3.75 pounds. Now my doctor is talking about the possibility of inducing me a week early, so I don't have to go through the pain of delivering a massive child. (Of course, this all comes to pass three days after my mom books her plane ticket and I submit my maternity leave...) My mom reminded me I was big: 8 lb 12 ounces. In fact, all her babies were big... Cheryl being the largest at 10 pounds!! Harley is thrilled. I guess tall trumps!

Three generations of short genes (granddad's height DIDN'T trump in this case). And note Harley is on his toes!

P.S. I've been meaning to blog about the fantastic time I had at the Barry Manilow concert for days, but just haven't had the time. Instead, I will link to Cheryl's new blog, where you can read all about the Fanilow madness (which for the record, was instilled in us by our hip mother two decades ago)!

Michael, My Valentine

Sure I'm married to five feet six and a half inches of pure sexy. Harley treats me like a queen every day, especially when I'm prego, and for that I love him "longer than always." But this year, someone beat Harley to the Valentine punch! I received a gift at 5:59AM, just after my newscast ended, from one Michael Spencer... Fox 5 tech crew member extraordinaire. I've always liked Michael. He's friendly, dedicated and has a great sense of humor. Sometimes he operates our robotic cameras. Other days he's right beside me in the control room playing the roll of "Playout" (cues and rolls all our video). I always smile when I see him in Playout position because I know he'll be on his toes and make a few cracks during the show to keep everyone in the control room from taking this news biz too seriously. I don't know him that well. I couldn't tell you if he's married, where he lives or really anything else about him, but today I can tell you he has a heart of gold! He called me at 4:50AM (five minutes before my show started) and asked me to visit him in the robo cam room after my show. I did and Michael surprised me with a box of chocolates!

He told me that six years ago his mother died on Valentine's Day. Every year since he's honored a tradition to give a little something to the "great women" he's surrounded by whom he enjoys. He says it helps him think of his mother. I was so touched! Nothing says "I appreciate you" to a prego like a box of chocolates! What a great way to start the holiday! Thanks Michael!

I also just had to share a picture of this darling card I received yesterday! My friend Kelley decided to do Valentine cards instead of Christmas cards this year. What a great idea! I love her creativity. The cards turned out super cute!

L'Eggo my Prego

I wouldn't say I've had strong "cravings" since being pregnant, but my eating habits and food preferences have certainly changed. I'm posting two lists, mostly for me, as I think it will be interesting to go back and look at them one year from now.

Food I LOVE as a Prego:
-blueberry Luna bars
-all fruit, especially grapefruit
-green apples smothered in crunchy peanut butter
-fruit juice (cannot get enough!)
-veggies & dill dip
-Sour Patch Kids
-Starburst jellybeans
-Kraft mac & cheese (this is a staple at least once a week and YES I like it reheated too!)
-Frosted Mini Wheats & Frosted Flakes cereal
-Ginger Ale (I'm not sure I'd ever even HAD this beverage pre-pregnant, and now I drink it ALL the time.)
-brie cheese & crackers (until I learned brie cheese is not recommended for pregos)
-Cafe Rio shredded chicken salad (not a day goes by I don't crave this... but living in MD, I have YET to satisfy this desire... even once... while pregnant!)

Food I used to love that I've lost nearly all interest in:
-Mexican food
-nachos (I used to have tortilla chips, melted cheese and salsa every Friday. No more.)
-potato chips
-Egg McMuffin (haven't had one since the day I blogged about it!)
-eggs in general
-Honey O's cereal (except at the Linds in NYC. For some reason they were really good there.)
-Coke (this is a HUGE change!)
-Dairy Queen chocolate chip cookie dough blizzards

My sister Cheryl thinks pregnancy is the best thing to ever happened to my diet, since for the most part, I eat healthier now. Tell that to this BIG 31 week BELLY:

One man's trash...

Is our baby's treasure. Like every first time parent we have A LOT to buy. It's pretty overwhelming and very expensive. We are not above random hook-ups. Therefore I was thrilled when Harley found this:

Looks great right? And it's even blue! It plays a dozen classical songs, has lots of white noise options, six speeds... our baby will be rocked and soothed for hours! Impressed? Now comes the part where I tell you where he got it. In a dumpster. That's right my poor husband is not above selling his body for science OR dumpster diving. He was returning home from class last week when he spotted it in a pile of stuff of the side of the road, apparently left by family who was recently evicted. (Okay, so he didn't actually "dive" in a dumpster... but close enough!) He was scared to tell me where he found it (something about the Diva in me being snobby about it...), and I must admit I was a little apprehensive at first. But after we scrubbed it down and washed the seat, I think it looks as good as new! One major purchase down.... countless others to go!

I'm so pleased with Harley I'll even forgive him for this post.

Something pretty amazing is happening in my first pregnancy. One of my very best friends, Mindy Lind, is prego too! We're due nine days apart and both expecting boys! We didn't really intend to get pregnant together, (although I credit her for sparking my "baby evolution") and are we're still in shock it all timed out like it did. In hindsight, we couldn't have planned it better if we'd tried!

Inspired by first trimester nausea and plotted during a "let's get together just to co-miserate" weekend back in September, we hatched a plan to go on a Babymoon! We wanted the tropical, sunny, frozen Dacri, big belly in bikini kind... but for several reasons, we ended up with the jam-packed subway, FREEZING, hot chocolate, squeeze into four layers kind. (What were those several reasons again?)

(I know I look ridiculous . I forgot my hat that day and did I mention it was FREEZING?????)

Who needs fun in the sun when you have weirdos on the subway?

Needless to say, our "Manhattamoon" was great! We ate... a lot, shopped for everything from diaper bags to dust ruffles, pity partied in our symptoms again, relieved our aching feet with pedicures, bonded in our fears of labor, just about passed out on the floor of the Marriott Hotel and savored our "one last hurrah" weekend together before these boys arrive and CHANGE EVERYTHING. We've been so bless to live only five hours apart for the last 18 months. We've somehow managed to visit each other NINE times! Four times we trekked to NYC, four times they schlepped to DC and once we met in Amish Country! Not only will babies cramp our footloose and fancy-free travels, the Linds move to Denver in two weeks! We will miss them so much!!!

Best Pregnancy Perk Ever: We were standing, FREEZING (temperature was 18 degrees) in a LONG TKTS line when a security guard noticed Mindy's belly, asked if she was pregnant and immediately moved all four of us to the front of the line! We saw Spamalot, starring Clay Aiken! We even caught him in his debut performance! Who knew!?

We can totally do this baby thing if we get to sit in these all day!

Perfect Timing: I was conveniently in town during Mindy's baby shower!

It's official... we've popped!!
